Paul DeBell, assistant professor of Political Science, explores a familiar but little-understood side of politics: the emotions they make us feel. Political psychology is essentially the study of how people’s feelings about politics affect their political behavior. This approach emerged in the late ’80s and early ’90s, DeBell explains, but it really took hold as a subfield of political science in the 2000s.

The Skyhawks Cycling team is no slouch: Winners of 20 Division I national championships since 1994, FLC Cycling is one of the premier collegiate cycling programs in the country. Competing in track, mountain biking, cyclocross, BMX, and road, this year's team is ranked #2 in the nation. The FLC squad has especially excelled in mountain biking, that oh-so-Durango sport for which the Cycling team has earned 16 national titles, including the inaugural collegiate mountain biking national title in 1994, the team's first-ever competition.

That's why it's amazing that the seeds for this powerhouse of collegiate cycling were planted 30 years ago by two student dishwashers and fertilized with free pizzas.

Over the years my answer to the question, what do you want to be when you grow up?, was constantly changing: from being a marine biologist to a forensic pathologist and even a geologist. In my freshman year at Fort Lewis I declared a major and with that I thought I had finally found my answer to the question – I wanted a career in politics. As a high school senior I discovered that my passion for foreign affairs and politics was something I ultimately wanted to pursue in college.

Even after three and a half years of being a student at Fort Lewis College, it is still hard to forget how overwhelmed and nervous I felt to be going away to college after graduating from high school. As a first generation student and the first of my siblings to be going away to college, I was fearful of how leaving my family and mentors would affect my life and my success in school.

I have always liked having a plan and setting goals, so when I started my junior year as a Political Science major at Fort Lewis, finding an internship was part of my plan and my number one goal. I spent some time researching big internship opportunities that would put me front and center of the political world in Washington D.C. and eventually found one that fit my standards. I spent days preparing all of my application materials and writing and editing the essay questions. Finally in January I submitted my application to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Internship Program and the waiting game began.
