Fort Lewis College is one of only 156 universities and colleges around the world to be honored by Exercise is Medicine® for its efforts to create a culture of wellness on campus.

At a small, distanced ceremony on Friday, October 9, the Fort Lewis College community and friends broke ground for a new state-of-the-art facility.

Senate Bill 20-219 sets in place a lease-purchase agreement to fund continuing capital construction projects at Fort Lewis College, University of Colorado, and Colorado State University.

President Begaye and FLC President Tom Stritikus signed an agreement that provides $2,500 per student, per term. The agreement also establishes a partnership between FLC and the Office of Navajo Nation Scholarship and Financial Assistance (ONNSFA), which will distribute and monitor the funds.

This new partnership, along with new FLC programs like the Pre-Health Certificate, will add to the College’s health sciences offerings, giving students more avenues to join the healthcare field. The College was also recently awarded just over $3 million to begin designing a new Health Sciences & Athletics Complex on campus.

A new health sciences complex will add classrooms and research space for Fort Lewis College’s Exercise Science, Public Health, and other programs that train students for healthcare careers. The College is also beginning a new Pre-Health Certificate program in fall 2018 to help students get what they need to pursue healthcare-related education and jobs after graduation. 

Rotem Ishay won an individual national championship with the FLC cycling team, with the assistance of a local performance center’s fitness testing. Now, not only does Ishay run that same center—he has also brought his career as an exercise specialist back to campus through a unique partnership. Ishay (Exercise Specialist, ’12) is now the director of the Durango Performance Center, a sports lab that provides performance testing to both elite-level athletes and everyday people who want to improve their health, wellness, and performance.

Associate Professor of Public Health Kevin Griffith says global health is who he is. Global health initiatives are certainly a large part of Griffith’s professional life—he brings a decade’s experience as a medical officer with the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) to his teaching at Fort Lewis College, and he continues to serve the President’s Malaria Initiative as a technical consultant.
