    Fort Lewis College is one of 104 schools receiving six-year grants as part of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Inclusive Excellence 3 (IE3) initiative. IE3 challenges U.S. colleges and universities to substantially and sustainably build capacity for student belonging, especially for those historically excluded from the sciences.

    For two years, FLC has sponsored the Julia Robinson Math Festival, a national organization promoting mathematical education to local 6th and 7th grade students. The goal of this event, sponsored by the Mathematics Department, is to make math non-competitive and fun.     When Giancarlo Vigil studied abroad in Argentina as a junior, his Uruguayan grandmother gave him one piece of advice: “Giancarlo, you have to try maté when you get there.” “I had no idea what that was,” Vigil (Economics, ’15) admits. But after his first taste of yerba maté, the traditional South American beverage, he fell in love—so much so that he founded The Maté Exchange in Durango after graduation.

    For many years, I had a question in my head that would not go away – should I return to school and commit to earning a four year degree? My late 20’s and early 30’s involved long summers working in backcountry settings followed by quiet winters, working random jobs to pass the time. I discovered Durango in 2009. At the time, I was managing a two-year project protecting sensitive high alpine environment in the San Juan Mountains.
