There’s no business like the stage business, and Fort Lewis College students have access to it all, thanks to FLC’s thriving Theatre Department and the annual Durango PlayFest.

The annual event that brings national theatrical talent to town also gives students a way to spend their summers helping run a festival. 

The Theatre Department took 18 students to Los Angeles for The Kennedy Center American College Theater Regional Festival.

FLC Theatre Lecturer Felicia Lansbury Meyer and Hollywood actors are spearheading a new theatre festival in Durango. Actors Dan Lauria and Wendie Malick, fans of Durango, inspired a small group of local performing arts lovers to create a space for playwrights to develop new plays with professional actors and directors. The new festival will utilize Fort Lewis College Theatre students, run workshops and mentorships, and eventually perform at FLC's Mainstage. 

Music lovers have a reason to celebrate this fall when the Community Concert Hall, the Four Corners region’s cultural nexus for the past two decades, marks that birthday with a special edition of the annual Jazz on the Hill fundraiser.

“It’s gratifying to see Fort Lewis College alumni give back to their alma mater in such an important way,” says Keith Newbold, vice chair of the FLC Foundation. “With this gift, the Nords are investing in the lives of the future FLC students who will walk in their footsteps.”

Six students specializing in vocal performance in Fort Lewis College’s Music program received recognition at the regional National Association of Teachers of Singing auditions this April. This was the first time that students represented FLC at the event, with 12 Music majors competing with more than 500 collegiate singers from Colorado and Wyoming.

Over three months, nine faculty and staff members received grants for their programs and departments, ranging in size from $750 to $120,000.

A Doll's House, a three-act play in prose by Henrik Ibsen, is the first theatrical production of the Spring 2017 FLC Theatre Department. Originally written in 1879, the piece centers on themes of gender in society, individualism, and marriage.

The FLC Theatre Department is presenting William Shakespeare's The Tempest for the fall semester! Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on November 4, 5, 10, 11, 12 and a 2 p.m. matinee on November 6, in FLC's Mainstage Theatre.

Trojan Women: A Love Story, is the newest theatrical production from the FLC Theatre Department. Directed by Melissa Firlit, this performance explores love, war, and power.

Natalie Benally’s theatre career has come full circle. When she was a teenager, her high school did not even offer drama courses. Now, she teaches in its brand-new theatre arts program. In order to complete this cycle, her career intersected with Fort Lewis College—twice.

Playwright Eric Coble has hit the big time. His play “Velocity of Autumn” premiered on Broadway in 2014, and lead actress Estelle Parsons earned a Tony Award nomination for her role. After so much promising success, Coble’s star has kept right on rising—and this fall, he soared right back to his alma mater, Fort Lewis College.

Spring Awakening is a rock musical with music by Duncan Sheik and a book and lyrics by Steven Sater. It is based on the German play Spring Awakening (1891) by Frank Wedekind. Set in late 19th-century Germany, the musical tells the story of teenagers discovering the inner and outer tumult of teenage sexuality. In the musical, alternative rock is employed as part of the folk-infused rock score.

Playwright & Fort Lewis College alumnus Eric Coble (English, '90) returned to campus in October to teach a series of workshops held in the Department of Theatre. Eric's Broadway play The Velocity of Autumn was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2015, and its star, Estelle Parsons, received a Tony Nomination for Best Actress in a Play. We caught up with Eric for a breakfast chat about his career, his time at the college, and most importantly, how he likes his eggs.

Fort Lewis College annually evaluates professors on the merit of their teaching, service, and scholarly activities and confers promotions and tenure to high achievers. In addition, some professors are awarded the title of Emerita to honor them for lengthy service.
