Professor Laurie Williams was named one of 67 winners in the first phase of the $6.7 million Energizing Rural Communities Prize challenge. The competition is designed to incentivize the nation's clean energy trailblazers to reenergize innovation and reassert American leadership in the energy marketplace.

Fort Lewis College is one of 104 schools receiving six-year grants as part of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Inclusive Excellence 3 (IE3) initiative. IE3 challenges U.S. colleges and universities to substantially and sustainably build capacity for student belonging, especially for those historically excluded from the sciences.

A Durango-based nonprofit uses both a social system from the past and student talents from the present to make it affordable for Four Corners-area homeowners to add solar power systems to their homes. 

FLC’s lab is one of four academic labs in the nation conducting liquid sodium research, running experiments critical to the future of nuclear power and producing the industry’s next engineers.

Fourteen FLC students spent their spring break getting some sun – but rather than soaking it up on a beach, they harnessed it to help power a remote community on the Navajo Nation in central New Mexico. Six Engineering students and eight student volunteers from a variety of disciplines spent the first week in March installing solar systems on the Counselor Chapter’s chapter house and on three residences.

It’s been only two years since Sitter Family Hall first opened its doors to students and faculty, but the new facility already has transformed the way physics, engineering, and geology are studied and taught at FLC.

For many Native students, a career in the STEM fields – science, technology, engineering, and mathematics – can often seem impossibly out of reach. That's where the American Indian Science & Engineering Society comes in.

As a Native American-Serving, Nontribal Institution with a significant Latinx population and advanced teaching and research facilities housed within a new $35 million building, Fort Lewis College is well suited to help the National Science Foundation reach its research and diversity goals.

An engineer and an artist start a doughnut shop. That pairing is so unexpected that it sounds like the setup to a punchline. But Rendezvous Doughnuts in Durango is no joke. Owner and founder Charlie Shew (Engineering, ’17) and brand manager Hayley Kirkman (Art, ’17) are having serious fun with the craft bakery they opened in late 2017.

“We don't build robots,” he explains. “We build the autonomy that goes in the robots and so we're kind of like brain surgeons, really. We put in the computer code. We put in the algorithms that enable the robots to make their own decisions.”

Over three months, nine faculty and staff members received grants for their programs and departments, ranging in size from $750 to $120,000.

Sitter Family Hall, completed in 2017, reflects Fort Lewis College's commitment to the sciences with a facility dedicated to Geosciences, Physics & Engineering.

The FLC Foundation will host its annual celebration and fundraiser, TLC for FLC, in the building on April 6.

Alumnus Peter Mesard says he chose to attend Fort Lewis College because of the outdoors—the skiing and the mountain climbing, especially. But his academic experience is what stuck with him, so much so that he has established the Peter Mesard Undergraduate Research Fund for present and future FLC students.

Training the “creative geeks” is something Fort Lewis College is built to do. All of FLC’s programs are built upon the liberal arts foundation that led to the College’s designation as Colorado’s public liberal arts college. What this means is that computer engineering students don’t just study computer engineering, they study art, music, English, philosophy, and history

This partnership will open doors for FLC students, particularly minority students, to collaborate in cutting edge research while preparing them to make the move to graduate school or a career.

Since the spill, organizations across the Four Corners, including Fort Lewis College, have been stepping up efforts to study and monitor the Animas and other area water sources. 

Computer engineers create the future. By bridging electrical engineering and computer science, computer engineers develop software that integrates with complex devices like robots, remote sensors, self-driving vehicles, rovers, probes, drones, spacecraft, and even the smartphones in everyone’s pockets.
