McBrayer said the award will allow him to continue exploring the issue of misinformation and fake news. Specifically, he will explore a range of steps liberal societies may justifiably take to limit the production and spread of fake news, encourage the production and spread of genuine news, and insulate political and social life from the harms of fake news that cannot be suppressed. 

This year's faculty and staff award recipients exhibit exceptional work, from supporting FLC's day-to-day operations with excellence to advancing institutional goals.

Three FLC students received the Seek Your Adventure award from Outdoor Pursuits to help them pull off the ultimate backcountry expedition.

Jill Coons received the Silver Torch Award for her career in auxiliary services and years of service in NACAS.

Six awardees were chosen for their excellence in the classroom and exemplary service to Fort Lewis College.

Over seven months, 28 faculty and staff members received grants for their programs and departments, ranging in size from $1,000 to $3.7 million.

The First National Bank of Durango and the Fitzgerald family recently gave a $100,000 gift to Fort Lewis College. The donation is in recognition of the board of directors of the bank, which was recently sold to TBK Bank, SSB. The First National Bank of Durango had a long association with FLC, and the gift has already impacted students and campus is a positive way.

For this outstanding work in the humanities, Justin McBrayer is honored as the 2018-19 Fort Lewis College Featured Scholar.

School of Business Administration has been granted $10,000 for the Wells Fargo Native American Business Scholarship

“After almost 20 years of teaching,” he says, “I’m getting there.”

This July, Sitter Family Hall received LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. The building, completed in Spring 2017 to house the Geosciences and Physics & Engineering Departments, received the nationally-recognized certification for implementing strategies and solutions for environmental and human health performance.

The 2017-18 Fort Lewis College award winners represent the best of the best faculty and staff. These individuals have distinguished themselves in their teaching and service to the students of Fort Lewis College. 

“My path to teaching at FLC has been non-traditional. My degree is a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, not a PhD. I was (and still am) a practitioner, a veterinarian, who had always dreamed of teaching as that other thing I might love to do.”

“The academic environment at Fort Lewis is one in which faculty with ideas can make things happen that have real impacts on students and our society. I'm lucky that I've been able to take advantage of that openness to forge a career that I really love.”

The Fort Lewis College assistant professor of chemistry was awarded a Support of Competitive Research (SCORE) award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which was followed by her being named a 2017 Cottrell Scholar from the Research Corporation for Science Advancement. 

Five faculty and staff award winners for the 2017-18 academic year were announced on March 30, 2017.

Her passion for what she does translates into ensuring that her students appreciate the value and power of math in the modern world.

For her, pursuing what she loves serves as motivation to be the best teacher, mentor, scholar and advocate she can be.

For Fort Lewis College Assistant Professor of Chemistry Dr. Katie Mouzakis, being a good teacher boils down to a simple mantra: “If my students are learning, then I am doing my job.”
