In two short weeks, Fort Lewis College is celebrating its fifth annual #GivingTuesday, a 24-hour fundraising campaign that seeks to raise funds from 550 donors this year.

Barr & Roberta Armstrong Barr Foundation has given $1.4 million for student scholarships in the College’s Teacher Education program.

The Gene and Sally Bradley Scholarship will be available in fall 2015 with preference given to accounting and music majors.

I am a Financial Aid Counselor, where I have the opportunity to help and advice students and families on how to pay for college. Applying for federal funds opens up a lot of opportunities for students to access funds to be able to attend college, and my job is to try to make it happen without money being their biggest concern. I advise them on making the best financial decision available to them. I have been working at the Office of Financial Aid for 9 months, although I arrived at Fort Lewis College in the summer of 2012 as an International Student.

In a study published by SmartAsset, an analytics organization out of New York, Fort Lewis College was ranked in the top five Best Value Colleges in Colorado. The study looked at factors such as scholarships and grants awarded, tuition and student living costs, retention, and average starting salary for graduates.

The aim is to provide families with free professional guidance on ways to pay for college, specifically how to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is a crucial step in the college planning process. College Goal Saturday is free, open to everyone, and will take place from 1-3 p.m. in Reed Library on campus.

Even with changes to the U.S. Department of Education's Free Application for Federal Student Aid that have made the form easier to fill out, the FAFSA, as it's commonly called, can still can be a daunting task.
