Emerging stronger than ever following the COVID-19 pandemic, Fort Lewis College's American Indian Business Leaders chapter had a huge year of wins on and off campus.

Wak葻谩lyap铆 Coffee, founded 新加坡六合彩 junior Devyn Valandra, took home the $10,000 first-place cash prize for the best business plan at this year’s Hawk Tank competition.

New business ideas at this year's Hawk Tank ranged from outdoor gear companies to luxury streetwear brands and everything in between. The variety of pitches highlighted the underlying purpose of the business plan competition—to give students the tools they need to realize their dreams.

This year, the annual Hawk Tank Business Plan Competition included a Four Corners region high school track, recent FLC alumni track, FLC student track, and—for the first time ever—a San Juan College student track.

The Hawk Tank Business Plan Competition is launching on January 26 and has expanded to include students from San Juan College. 

Seven teams from the high school, college, and alumni tracks received cash awards for their business ideas at the 2020 Hawk Tank Business Plan competition.

The 2020 Hawk Tank Business Plan Competition hosted by SOBA and Alumni Engagement will conclude via Zoom on April 18.

The annual event hosted by FLC’s School of Business Administration and Alumni Engagement Office had 19 teams submit business plans.

Southwest Colorado Small Business Development Center funding expands popular business plan competition to local high school students, and top prizes will include Fort Lewis College scholarships.

An engineer and an artist start a doughnut shop. That pairing is so unexpected that it sounds like the setup to a punchline. But Rendezvous Doughnuts in Durango is no joke. Owner and founder Charlie Shew (Engineering, ’17) and brand manager Hayley Kirkman (Art, ’17) are having serious fun with the craft bakery they opened in late 2017.

It’s hard to go into business with family. But the Martin brothers can hardly imagine working with anybody else. For them, the formula is paying off: Nitrum Dynamic Paint, which they founded while attending Fort Lewis College, is increasing its capacity to recycle paint, while also contributing to a better world and keeping these brothers connected beyond their college experiences.

“We want to dominate the paint industry. [Nitrum Dynamic Paint] is eco-friendly, we’re helping the environment, and we’re helping people at the individual level.”

Tara Trask and Ramona Pierson will visit Fort Lewis College on Wednesday, February 22 and Thursday, February 23. They will work with a number of classes, in addition to participating in several events open to the public.

Now in its second year, the Hawk Tank Business Plan Competition gives aspiring entrepreneurs the opportunity to create a business plan under the mentorship of successful business experts from our area.
