For David Cole, geology isn’t just a vocation; it runs in his veins, propelling him toward a dream career that’s taken him from the Rockies to Central Asia’s Tien Shan Mountains and back again. That dream found footing in the Fort Lewis College Geology program, which boasts unparalleled access to the Colorado Plateau.

Check out FLC's First Year Launch programs at Purgatory resort, only a half-hour drive from campus. Purgatory is a repository of geologic and biologic gems to be discovered. 

September 2 was the first day of classes for FLC and for 24 new faculty.

The formal paths make it easier for PCC students with an associate degree to transfer into the same academic program at FLC and pursue a four-year degree.

It’s been only two years since Sitter Family Hall first opened its doors to students and faculty, but the new facility already has transformed the way physics, engineering, and geology are studied and taught at FLC.

In September 2018, FLC alumni and faculty boarded the D&SNGR for a trip back in time.

The Durango Train passes through over a billion years of geology and over 60 years of cinematic history on its 45-mile trek to Silverton. FLC Geology Professor Gary Gianniny lectured on the history of the landscape, while Asst. Professor of English Stacey Sotosky lectured on the many films made in the region!

A wildfire is a quickly and frequently changing situation. Given this kind of fluid data, it's often hard for the public to get the vital up-to-date information they need to deal. For the 416 Fire near Durango, helping get out that kind of timely and essential information is where Fort Lewis College comes in. 

The recent announcement by the Department of the Interior that it proposes to reduce the size of Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments in Utah is one of the most high-profile changes to public lands in recent history. And Jon Harvey, assistant professor of Geosciences, is helping the public and his students understand those changes through interactive GIS maps.

Sitter Family Hall, completed in 2017, reflects Fort Lewis College's commitment to the sciences with a facility dedicated to Geosciences, Physics & Engineering.

Alumnus Peter Mesard says he chose to attend Fort Lewis College because of the outdoors—the skiing and the mountain climbing, especially. But his academic experience is what stuck with him, so much so that he has established the Peter Mesard Undergraduate Research Fund for present and future FLC students.

When it’s completed, the GPE Hall’s rooftop observatory deck will be dedicated to Mr. Dalpra.

The hall will be a game changer for FLC, greatly enhancing the educational and research opportunities for the College and the community.

The Skyhawks Cycling team is no slouch: Winners of 20 Division I national championships since 1994, FLC Cycling is one of the premier collegiate cycling programs in the country. Competing in track, mountain biking, cyclocross, BMX, and road, this year's team is ranked #2 in the nation. The FLC squad has especially excelled in mountain biking, that oh-so-Durango sport for which the Cycling team has earned 16 national titles, including the inaugural collegiate mountain biking national title in 1994, the team's first-ever competition. 

That's why it's amazing that the seeds for this powerhouse of collegiate cycling were planted 30 years ago by two student dishwashers and fertilized with free pizzas.

The funding is a way for LPEA to support the community, as well as an investment where the return is a top notch workforce.

In August of 2015, over 3 million gallons of mine waste was accidentally released into the Animas River. In this micro-documentary, we look at the history of the mine, the effects of the spill, why it happened, and how Fort Lewis and the Durango community responded.

The community is invited to the Student Union Ballroom for this free forum.

“I can’t think of a better place,” says Chuck Baltzer (’82 Geology) when asked about studying geology at Fort Lewis College.

Construction is well under way on Fort Lewis College’s new Geosciences, Physics and Engineering (GPE) Hall. Also underway is the FLC Foundation’s effort to raise private support for the building.
 
Chuck Baltzer (’82, Geology) is leading the way for FLC alumni giving back in support of the GPE Hall. His generous support of the hall will have a big impact on the departments and students who will call the new building home. In recognition of this gift, Chuck will name both a lab and a student study library in the new facility.

FLC alumnus David Kasper (Business Administration - Engineering Management, '14) takes us on a tour of the new Geosciences, Physics & Engineering Hall, currently under construction on the FLC West Campus. Kasper is the Assistant Superintendent for Jaynes Construction, the contracted builder for the Hall.
