Food on campus

Campus Composting

The Environmental Center takes care of Fort Lewis College’s in-house composting system, the Rocket composter. In partnership with Campus Dining, we divert over ten thousand pounds of food waste from the dining hall, turning it into nutrient-rich compost for garden and landscape projects on campus. This service is not open to the public.

Weigh the Waste

This ongoing post-consumer food waste awareness program encourages diners to reduce food waste by only taking what they will eat.

Dining Hall Initiatives

The Environmental Center works with our Dining Services provider, Fresh Eats, on several food service sustainability initiatives to reduce food and packaging waste and shift our menu to include foods with a lower carbon impact.

Plant-Based Meals

The Environmental Center and Campus Dining partner to offer a free, entirely plant-based meal during Earth Week in April. We also develop recipes and conduct focus groups with students to ensure their preferences are considered.
