Fort Lewis College and San Juan College hosted the inaugural POWER Teaching Conference in Farmington, New Mexico, which aimed to improve the higher education experience for Indigenous students.

are heading back to their schools after being in a different kind of classroom – the San Juan River. For five days, they were on the water for the inaugural run of a teacher program at Fort Lewis College. (KOB)

The new Educator on the Water program provides teachers with an immersive, hands-on learning experience in nature, equipping them with innovative teaching tools to use in their classrooms —and outside of it. 

The San Juan Mountains are a paradise for winter adventure seekers. Peaks and slopes, capped with blankets of snow, create an invitingly gorgeous and undeniably intimidating landscape. The snow can be several feet deep, forming drifts that defy gravity. It’s a wild area that beckons thrill seekers and scientists across the nation.

Students learn to speak and teach the Ute language through the Southwest Indigenous Language Development Institute.

FLC’s Academic Success Coaches are faculty who partner with students to help navigate some of college’s most daunting aspects. Through this free program, coaches help students discover, understand, and articulate their passions and interests. 

The Academic Hub opened this past week with palpable excitement from students. The Hub centralizes many of Fort Lewis College’s crucial, student-focused services in one convenient location.

Since she first set foot on the Fort Lewis College campus 30 years ago as a first-generation college student, Jennifer Trujillo (English, ’93) has poured her life into learning, teaching, and pioneering a sustainable path toward a more equitable education for all.
