Thanks to one remarkable lady, Fort Lewis College Teacher Education students have extra support in earning their degrees. The Robert M. Barr & Roberta Armstrong Barr Foundation has announced the largest single cash gift in FLC history: $1.4 million for Teacher Education scholarships.

Roberta Barr attended Fort Lewis when it was still located in Hesperus, CO. I’ve flipped through a scrapbook filled with photos from her time at the Old Fort, including tumbling team practice. She spent her career as an educator and administrator here in the Animas Valley. When she retired, her second career as a community supporter and philanthropist really took off. Thanks to her and her husband, many generations of FLC students studying to be teachers have benefited from Barr Foundation scholarships.

Fort Lewis College has been teaching teachers for over a century; a legacy that makes me very proud to be a Skyhawk. It is the generosity of people like Roberta and Robert that have made that legacy possible. Though they have both passed away, the Barrs will always hold a special place in the history of this great College.

Sincerely,

Dene Thomas
President, Fort Lewis College
