I was pleased to have the Tri-Ute Youth Leadership Conference on campus this week. This special event brings together members of the Southern Ute, Ute, and Ute Mountain Ute tribes for team, leadership, and educational activities.

Fort Lewis College serves Native American and Alaska Native villages from across the country, but our history and location ties us closely to the tribes of this area. It is important to me to ensure that the Ute tribes of the Four Corners will always have a place here at Fort Lewis College.

We know how much a college education can benefit a person, and I was gratified to see a number of Fort Lewis College alumni leading the Tri-Ute Youth Leadership Conference. You hear the sentiment that we want our college graduates to “go out and make the world a better place” so often that perhaps it’s become cliché. But just because some is cliché doesn’t mean it’s not true, and the FLC alumni leading the next generation of youth is proof that our graduates are out there doing great things.

Sincerely,

Dene Thomas
President, Fort Lewis College
