Skyhawk harriers run into national championships

The Fort Lewis College men's Cross Country team has an appointment with destiny this weekend.

The squad will compete in the the NCAA Division II National Championships after capturing a 6th place finish at the NCAA Division II South Central Regionals, in Denver, on Nov. 3, qualifying the team for the national championships for just the second time ever — and the first time since 1995.

"That's pretty sweet," said first-year FLC head coach Mark Dutro. "They've been ready and focused. They knew what they needed to do and just ran well."

Senior Kip Mutai led the team into their spot for a shot at the national title at Southern Missouri State University, in Joplin, Missouri, on Saturday. Mutai ran the 10 km course at the Regionals in 32:53, good for 15th place overall. He also earned All-South Central Region honors for his Top 15 finish.

"He just went for it," said Dutro.

And now the Skyhawks get to go for it, too.
