My entire education prior to college was spent in the small town of South Haven, Michigan.  I had lived in the same small town my whole life and finally decided when the time came for my application to college, I wanted to go to a big school and get out of the small town feel, so I applied to Michigan State University, got accepted, and planned on moving there. In the late spring, I got a realization that the small town feel was for me, and a friend encouraged me to go to Fort Lewis, because she loved it so much here.

I agreed, applied, and got a hefty scholarship for my academic achievements. I came here on August 10, 2010, accompanied by my sister and her best friend, and it was the best decision I had ever made. Being an out-of-state student was intimidating enough, but being one who had never even visited my school, or let alone Colorado, made it that much harder for me. But once I stepped foot on the FLC campus, I knew I had made the right choice. I moved into Cooper Hall, and met my roommate and future best friend, whom I still live with. But enough about me, here’s why I love Fort Lewis.

Fort Lewis provides a small class size, which doesn’t seem a big deal on the first day of class. But, as the semester progresses and you begin to feel that your professor is someone who actually cares about how you do in school and is there to support you in every aspect of your education, you realize how they are actually invested in you, and you aren’t just a name and a number on a piece of paper.

Secondly, I love being able to see my friends wherever I go. I can walk into any of the halls on campus and see a familiar face, sit down, and have a conversation. I don’t ever have to roam around the halls aimlessly looking down at my phone and avoiding eye contact, because I always have a friendly face by my side, ready to make me have a better day. I am also able to talk to my professors on a personal level outside of the classroom, which makes the relationship with them that much stronger, and really aides in my education.

Being surrounded by great people, an awesome community, and a beautiful atmosphere makes every day at Fort Lewis College amazing. There truly isn’t a day that I don’t love living in Colorado, and I couldn’t be happier with my decision to go to school at FLC.
